Abstract

The aim of this article is to connect research and fantasy in psychoanalysis. To this end, we will first discuss Freud’s notion of fantasy, from his theory of seduction, elaborated with a view to solving the enigma of neurosis, to the discovery of fantasy as producing symptoms. Second, we will move on to Lacan’s understanding of fantasy as a protection from the Real. Finally, we will discuss the status of research in psychoanalysis and its relation to the psychoanalyst-researcher. Building upon these points, we will propose that there exists a relation between the production of fantasy and the researcher’s unconscious issues.
