The review of the book The passion for the impossible: preambles of the concept of real in the teaching of Jacques Lacan, written by Wilson Camilo Chaves, published in 2021, investigates the complexity of the concept of Real in Lacanian theory. The central question is about the nature of the Real in Lacan and its evolution throughout his work. The objective is to critically analyze Chaves’ approach to this topic, revealing the layers of meaning and the progression of the concept of Real. The methodology used is a detailed critical analysis, both of the author’s arguments and the theoretical and historical contextualization of the concept. The main results of Chaves’ book present a detailed analysis of the Real, challenging traditional interpretations and expanding the understanding of this concept by resuming Lacan’s textual productions, including his Writings and Seminars. Chaves also incorporates insights from his master’s thesis, providing a longitudinal and multifaceted perspective on Lacanian theory. In the final considerations, the book stands out as a landmark in psychoanalytic and philosophical literature, offering indispensable reading for those studying Lacanian theory. Chaves’ meticulous approach, combined with his theoretical rigor, challenges the reader to re-examine pre-established conceptions and makes complex psychoanalytic themes accessible. Thus, the work not only clarifies fundamental aspects of Lacanian theory, but also illuminates new paths for the interpretation and practical application of modern Psychoanalysis, contributing significantly to the deepening of the academic discussion on Lacan.
