Objective: To assess family functioning and the risk of violence in elderly women living in a city in the interior of São Paulo. Methods: This is a quantitative, analytical, and cross-sectional study with a sample of 161 elderly people. The Family APGAR and Hwalek-Sengstock Elder Abuse Screening Test (H-S/EAST) instruments were used, with descriptive and inferential analysis. Results: It was identified that 89.4% of the participants presented good family functioning and 56.5% had a reduced risk of violence. The association between biological sex and risk of violence showed a tendency towards significance (p = 0.058), while the association between family dysfunction and increased risk of violence was statistically significant (p = 0.001). Conclusion: Understanding family functioning in female aging is essential to identify situations of violence and guide more sensitive care practices, in addition to contributing to the strengthening of public policies aimed at protecting the elderly.
